Elvis Presley became instantly fascinated by spirituality upon a single visit by Beverly Hills hairdresser Larry Gellar. Their conversations and journey together over the course of many years would profoundly influence Elvis's viewpoints on the world and his place in it. The Memphis Mafia, the group of guys who surrounded and protected Elvis were alternately dumbfounded and threatened by Elvis's new passion and the startling change in his behavior and thoughts. As I am a dear close friend of Sonny West and Larry Gellar, I have come to know this story very well and want to share my own thoughts on what happened to Elvis and also talk about the various teachings that so moved him, Larry Gellar and myself. So, over the course of time I will tell stories, recommend books and teachings that have moved me profoundly in my life and that I know were also enormously important to Elvis Presley. I know Elvis did not feel that the public truly knew him. He was well aware that he had become only an image and he desperately wanted to be able to use his incredible position in life to help people in deep and meaningful ways. At one time he asked Sri Daya Mata, the spiritual leader of Self Realization Fellowship if he could become a devotee and one day give spiritual guidance to her followers as she did. She assured Elvis that he had an equally important job to do performing and singing and that this path was meant for him.
